Great Lakes Engineering Group (GLEG) was selected by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Grand Rapids TSC to perform Full Construction Engineering Services on 13.04 miles of freeway sign upgrades along I-196. This project included upgrading all wood post mounted signs, column breakaway signs, and steel post mounted signs between 8th Avenue and Fuller Ave in Ottawa and Kent Counties. Existing overhead bridge mounted, truss mounted, and cantilever mounted signs were also replaced as part of this project. In addition to upgrading existing signing, new truss sign structures were installed on I-196 at Chicago Drive (M-121), Lake Michigan Drive (M-45), and Lane Avenue. A new cantilever sign structure was also installed on I-196 between US-131 and Lane Avenue. This project presented unique challenges with temporary traffic control operations while overhead signs were upgraded along I-196 in the downtown Grand Rapids area. Numerous hours were worked during non-peak times on this project to reduce the overall impact on the motoring public.
Our GLEG team is accustomed to projects with expedited schedules which may require working non-conventional schedules in order to meet specific project and client requirements. GLEG continually strives to exceed our clients’ expectations by delivering high quality, on-time, and on-budget projects.
