Client: Michigan Department of Transportation
Project Type: Underwater Bridge Inspections
Location: Bridges at various locations across the state

The 2020 MDOT Statewide Underwater Bridge Inspection project involved GLEG winning all six of the QBS MDOT Region RFP’s in order to perform the necessary underwater bridge safety inspections. The work and services package included inspections of structures owned by the Bay, Grand, Metro, North, Superior and University Regions. An additional work package included large deck and moveable structures located throughout the state managed within the Big Bride Inventory. The purpose of this project was to ensure continued safe functioning of the structures and to maintain compliance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). GLEG used state-of-the-art underwater technology coupled with decades of commercial dive experience to inspect, identify, and document streambed elevations, scout limits and substructure elements. The information gathered during these inspections is vital to ensuring safety is maintained through appropriate monitoring and preservation activities.

Due to dam failures in the Bay Region, in addition to scheduled routine underwater inspections, several bridges were inspected post flood and post flood repairs. In total, over 145 structures were inspected within a six-month time frame despite complications that arose from the emergence of COVID-19.
